Garage Door Panel Replacement

After an overnight freeze the door stuck to the slab, the opener strained, and something gave.

In plain words

Everything about a section replacement flows from knowing exactly which door you have. Two doors that look alike from the driveway can differ in section height, thickness, the shape of the joint where sections meet, where the hinges bolt on and how the skin is embossed. A new section has to share all of those details to seat cleanly against its neighbours. So the visit starts with a hunt for the manufacturer's label, usually on the edge of a section or on the track, followed by measurements and photographs. With that identity confirmed, the right section can be ordered with confidence rather than hope.

Sound familiar?

Years of slap shots have peppered the lower two sections with dents. Each one alone is small, but from the street the door looks tired, and the deepest dent near the centre has cracked the paint and shows bare steel.

How the visit goes

  1. Is a matching section still made?

Once the door is identified, the technician contacts the manufacturer or distributor to confirm that a section for that model, position and size can still be supplied, and in which colours. Door designs change over the years: embossing patterns, joint profiles and section heights get revised, and colours are retired. If the exact section is current, the order is straightforward. If the design has been discontinued, the conversation turns to the nearest current match and what the visual difference would be, or to replacing the door as a whole. The lead time for a made-to-order section is confirmed at the same time so you can plan.

  2. Fitting the new section into the door

The new section is lifted into the gap, its rollers guided into the tracks and its joint mated to the section below so the two profiles nest. Hinges go on according to the number stamped on them: each position in the door uses a different hinge offset, which places the roller progressively further from the door face so the upper sections follow the curve of the track. New self-tapping screws are driven into the stiles at the factory hole positions, a strut is bolted across if the section calls for one, and the technician confirms the section sits flat and the joint above closes tight.

  3. Holding off rust on the lower edge

Salt and slush are what turn a healthy bottom section into a flaking one, so give the lower sections a rinse when the salt season ends and again after any heavy slush. Look along the bottom edge and around the seal retainer for chipped paint and touch it up with the colour from your record before bare steel has a chance to bloom. Keep the bottom seal in good condition so water sheds off the face rather than sitting on the lip. Inside, a glance at the back of the section during the monthly check catches moisture marks early.

What affects the quote

  1. A make-safe visit while the section is on order

When the door has to be braced, disconnected or secured closed until the section arrives, that first visit is quoted as its own item, with the installation visit following once the part is in.

  2. Whether the exact section is still made

A current model is a straightforward order. A discontinued design may mean a section from a related series, a custom-made section, or a discussion about the whole door, each of which lands differently on the quote.

  3. Windows in the section

A glazed section carries frames, glass and sometimes decorative inserts, each specified with the order. A section with windows is quoted as a glazed section; adding windows where there were none changes the line as well.

What to have ready

  • Are any other sections dented, rusted or out of line?
  • What colour and panel design is the door?
  • What caused the damage, and when did it happen?

Garage Door Panel Replacement: questions

Questions
How do you work out which make and model my door is?

The manufacturer's label is the starting point. It is often a sticker on the end of a section, on the inside of the top section or on the vertical track, and it usually gives the model or series, a date and sometimes a colour code. Failing that, the panel design, section heights, thickness, joint profile and hinge spacing narrow it down, and the distributor can usually confirm the model from photographs and measurements.

Can I keep using the door while I wait for the section?

If the damage is cosmetic and the hinges, rollers and cables are sound, the door can usually stay in service. If a section is folded, a hinge has pulled out or a cable has slackened, the technician braces the door, disconnects the opener and asks you to leave it closed, because the opener pulling on a weakened section can turn a repairable door into a larger job. You will be told clearly which applies.

What is a strut, and does a new section need one?

A strut is a horizontal steel stiffener fastened across the inside of a section to keep it from bowing. Wide doors, top sections where the opener arm pulls, and bottom sections that take knocks are the usual places for them. If your damaged section had a strut, the new one gets a straight strut refitted or replaced. If a top section bowed because it never had one, adding a strut is part of putting it right.
