Garage Door Panel Replacement: what to note first

Garage Doors · Mississauga, Ontario

Technician in a black cap holding a wrench to a coiled black spring above a paneled door, with a blue cooler behind.

The top section has developed a bend where the opener arm pulls on it. On the way up it flexes visibly, the door hesitates near the top of its travel, and daylight shows through the joint below it when the door is closed.

Worth answering before the call

Roughly how old is the door, and has any section been replaced before? Is the door insulated, and how thick are the sections? Are any other sections dented, rusted or out of line?

How should I look after the door after the section is replaced?

A little routine goes a long way. Each month, look along the hinges for loose screws, spin the rollers, and check the door's balance by lifting it by hand with the opener disconnected. Twice a year, apply a light garage-door lubricant to hinge pivots, roller stems and springs, and keep the tracks clean and dry. Rinse salt off the lower sections in spring, touch up chips, and keep the bottom seal clear of ice in winter.

What information or photos help before the visit?

A photograph of the whole door from outside, a close-up of the damaged section, a picture of the manufacturer's label if you can find it, and a shot of the inside of the door showing the hinges, tracks and springs. Add the door's approximate width and height, whether it is insulated, its colour and panel style, and how the damage happened. That set often lets the technician confirm availability before arriving.
